Eira trwm, Coed Meurig (Heavy
snow, Coed Meurig) - Like so many areas, we had fantastic
snow this January and a walk in virgin, knee deep snow, inspired
this linocut.

The focus of the scene was, for me, the fantastic
elongated shadows of the trees falling across the unblemished
snow and the challenge was getting that first colour right,
not too dark, not too light. On the left, I've shown how this
looked before the other colours were applied on top. A very
'scary' blue! |

But, as the subsequent darker tones
were added, the scary blue became gentler and more subtle. I
purposely left the large area of snow (which takes up almost
half the area of the print) uninterrupted visually, apart from
the lone twiggy growth and the small rock on the left hand side
because I felt this best evoked the silence in the woods that
morning. |
